Xugana Island Lodge is situated on a private concession within the world-renowned Okavango Delta. The Okavango Delta braids across 15 000 km² of Botswana’s Kalahari Desert, providing an oasis to an abundance of wildlife. In the permanent delta, the myriad of sparkling waterways coil amongst the reed and papyrus beds and open unexpectedly onto tranquil lagoons that are fringed by wooded islands.
Xugana Lagoon is recognized as being the most spectacular permanent water camp in the Okavango Delta. The lodge, on a wooded island in the Xugana Lagoon, nestles beneath the shade of old wild ebony and African mangosteen trees facing and overlooks the lagoon. This exclusive reed and thatch structure blends seemingly with the surrounding landscape. Xugana prides itself on offering exceptional service, comfortable accommodation, and sumptuous cuisine.
The lodge boasts eight reed and thatch Lagoon-Facing Chalets that are raised on wooden platforms to afford spectacular views of the lagoon. All of the chalets feature twin beds, an en-suite bathroom with double vanities and shower, overhead fan, in-room safe, tea and coffee making facilities, umbrella, flashlight, air horn, hairdryer, and private deck.
The lodge facilities include a lounge, bar, various indoor and outdoor dining areas, swimming pool and viewing deck.
Xugana focusses on water-based activities that explore the delta. Tranquil mokoro trips provide a soothing way of viewing the multitude of water birds and pods of grunting hippos up-close. Motorboat safaris to lagoons and nearby islands offer
Xugana Island Lodge borders the Moremi Game Reserve, which has diverse habitats supporting a wide variety of animals. As well as possible sightings of wild dog, leopard and cheetah, other resident species include lion, elephant, buffalo, hippo, giraffe, hyena, zebra, kudu, red lechwe, sable and roan antelope.
Bird-watching is excellent throughout the year with species such as reed cormorant, African darter, eastern white pelican, African spoonbill, goliath heron, egrets, glossy ibis, sacred ibis, storks, geese and ducks only but a few to be spotted in the area.

"My wife and I spent 3 nights at Xugana Island Lodge towards the end of our honeymoon, and if I could use one word to describe our experience - "magical". The location of the lodge is absolutely stunning. The service was the best we experienced in all of Africa (led by Julia, Fred, Kays, & Chapman). The staff would go out of their way to make you feel comfortable at all times. The food was delicious and we enjoyed being able to eat with the staff. The activities - mokoro ride, game walk, fishing, sunset drinks, and delta tour - were all memorable. I would recommend Xugana Island Lodge to anyone visiting the Okavango Delta."
"Camp Xugana is a lovely lodge based on an Island in the Okavango Delta. You can only take a boat to and from the island, which makes it feel very exclusive. We say many hippo's, beautiful sunset's, crocodiles and many different birds. The rooms were luxurious, basing their theme off of an old hunting camp. The food was delicious! The guides were very friendly and educated!"
"Located on the edge of one the winding waterways lived up to expectations of being somewhere special. After drop off on remote grass airstrip I was ferried the last 7 or so km via narrow waterways to the Lodge and welcomed on arrival with refreshing warm moist towel and cold drink. Staff so warm and friendly (without being "over the top") and as with other lodges I've visited in Botswana it's fantastic to learn that many staff including on-site managers are from local small towns. Beautiful food and homemade bread to die for. I was very fortunate to be one of only 3 guests in residence. Enjoyed several boat trips though the delta and a wonderful slow moroko ride. During a walking safari we saw elephants, hippos, lechwe antelope and lots of bird including eagle owl. Also learned how to behave in presence of potentially dangerous wildlife. Tip - a collapsible trekking stick is useful on these walks. Huge focus on safety and cleanliness. Always felt very safe and secure despite remoteness."
"Awesome hospitality and education of the area! The staff are wonderful, making our stay so pleasant. The boat trips were great for seeing wildlife, the walking tour gave us a new prospective of the wildlife and our guides were so knowledgeable! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay!"
"I was absolutely delighted with our stay here. There are only a maximum of 16 guests at any one time meaning that the experience is personal and attentive. The accommodation is in thatched roof discreet rooms with views over the water. The rooms are beautifully presented and equipped well. The food was amazing, and guests sit down to eat with the staff every mealtime, giving guests the opportunity to feel very at home. In the evenings a fire pit is lit and guests gather round it to talk. Everything is included, including laundry and a well stocked bar. The game activities are well organised and guided by extremely experienced staff who seem to love their jobs. The activities include walking safaris, river cruises and trips in the traditional boats, called mokoros. There is nothing that would make this place better!"
"We spent 2 nights in July at Xugana. A beautiful lodge in the Delta. The staff and guides were friendly and worked hard for us. The food was very good and all dietary requests were taken care of. Our first night at the lodge we were the only guests at the lodge and were treated to evening dinner on the pontoon float It was very beautiful under the stars and the hot water bottles helped with the cool temperatures. Safaris are by boat or walking and opportunities for game viewing were significantly less and with the cooler temperatures bird watching was also less than in other areas of Botswana. A great place to relax but not my favorite for game or bird viewing."
"All of the staff are friendly and welcoming. They felt like family after my 4 night stay. The facilities and rooms are lovely and the food is plentiful and delicious. I especially loved the morning walks in the bush - the guides were excellent and taught me a lot. Mokoro is a must - like a Delta massage."
"We were greeted so warmly and immediately treated as part of the Xugana 'family' that this was quickly the way it really was. Our guide Ken and the management team of Erny and Julia, along with everyone else, made us feel so comfortable. We saw so much, learned so much and left immeasurably richer for the experience. A first rate set up, which I can highly recommend!"
"We had the best time ever staying at the Xugana Island Lodge, after a long flight, we were picked up by safari air in Maun and flown to the lodge and then transported by boat by a very friendly guide, on arrival we were greeted by smiles and cool towels then given the run down by Fred with a cold welcome drink. The accommodation was stunning felt like we were on a movie set, the food was amazing. Allen our guide was great fun and so knowledgeable, we did 2 walking safaris and lots of boat drives and a ride on a Mokoro so tranquil, wild life over whelming, it was magical and each day another wonderful surprise. It was a very special time, great atmosphere and lots of personal service. Sund-owners on the Delta just awesome. Thanks to Fred, Julia, Hannah, Allen and team for making our stay a once in a life time experience. Anne and Mark F"
"Xugana Island Lodge was our second of four camps in Botswana. This camp exceeded all our expectations and the setting in the Xugana Lagoon in the Okavango Delta is gorgeous. The activities are water based and before we arrived we thought they may lack the excitement of the game drives at other camps. Boy, were we wrong. As with our first stop at Leroo La Tau, the staff was just amazing. There was a really convivial atmosphere and they truly made us feel like family. The food was always tasty and varied and the camp itself was reminiscent of old style safaris; completely updated but with great vintage fixtures. Allen and Lasty were our guides and they were just great. Allen took us on a boat ride to see hippos, a humongous croc, beautiful birds, and other animals and on a Komoro ride which is a beautiful, peaceful way to experience the delta (the sunsets are unreal). Lasty led us on a bushwalk on Palm island which was a huge highlight of our entire safari. The Adrenalin rush of being on the ground and getting so close to all these beautiful animals can’t be beat. Both guides were funny, knowledgeable and very competent. One special moment at Xugana was waking up in the middle of the night to the loud grunts of the resident hippo who was rubbing himself against a tree a few feet away from our cabin."
