Reviews

"We stayed here on our 3 week SA trip for 3 nights. Coming through the main gate and having a 40km drive before reaching the Dwyka tented camp we realised we were going to be in for a treat. Hot towels and smiling staff welcomed us as we drove up to the main building. We were soon shown to our gorgeous tented lodge only a few meters away from the main building. We were totally speechless by the interior which was so beautifully done and nothing overlooked. A jacuzzi in the deck outside, an outside shower, loungers, gorgeous bathroom and bedroom. Once inside you were in your own little heaven and completely private. So, on top of that we had delicious food, amazing game drives with Casper who was full of enthusiasm and managed to get us close up to all the animals (even on foot). We did not want to leave this wonderful place."

"We stayed at the Dwyka Tented Lodge from 27 to 29 Oct 2014. We were warmly welcomed by Kobi du Preez and his team for a fabulous stay. The tented lodges are comfortable, spacious, brick walled lodges with tented roofs - extremely comfortable, all mod cons and a jacuzzi to boot. It can be worrying taking a jacuzzi with a baboon keeping a wary eye, and although baboons can be strong and dangerous, I am afraid humans win on a man to man basis, if you know what I mean. Our guide was Jani, who never failed to find all the big (and small) and all very interesting animals, with elephants, giraffes, lions right alongside the Jeep on many occasions. Format of the day was an early start to see all the animals up and about, back to the Lodge for a fantastic breakfast, then relax (the animals all seek shelter in the heat of the day anyway). A second trip in the late afternoon also saw many animals, with the additional benefit of a sun-downer served from the bonnet of the Jeep. One word of WARNING - if you follow the directions on the Sanbona web site, it is over 50km from the main R62 road to the Dwyka Tented Lodge and the road is claimed to be a gravel road but it is not - it is simply appalling and NOT to be attempted other than in 4WD vehicle. My rental Toyota only just made it and we almost got caught in sand traps at least twice. It was a very nerve wracking journey. Even more annoying is the fact that we found that there is an alternative entrance (the Western Gate) just 5km from the Dwyka Tented Lodge, which would have been so much easier. I STRONGLY recommend that you make arrangements to get picked up by their shuttle from the Welcome Lodge and leave your car there for the duration of your stay. Anyway don't get me wrong - this is a FANTASTIC RESORT, a fantastic team (their smiles never slipped when I was ranting about the drive up) and a fantastic chance to see big and small game close up. Wonderful memories of this trip will stay with me for a long time."

"Private game reserves have often been associated with being glorified zoos with the animals being kept in enclosures and fed by humans rather than hunt for themselves. This why when I selected Sanbona based on reviews I had read here and the fact that it was reasonably close to Cape Town, I was hoping for something totally different and unique and Sanbona was exactly that. With an area of about 54,000 hectors for the game reserve, animals roaming freely in their natural habitat, grazing and hunting for themselves this was as close as I could get to a National Park. What makes Sanbona special is the luxurious accommodation that this reserve has. In our case we stayed at Dwyka Tented Lodge which was complete luxury along with the unique experience of living in the center of the game reserve in a tent. Both the food and service at the reserve was top class. But really what made this place more endearing were the game drives with our ranger Gerard who was really good at his job, giving us a lot of information on the animals and their behavior and trying to get us the best possible sightings. Honestly I'd highly recommend this place if you want to have a luxurious stay with the experience of staying in the wild (however a warning note for people who go there expecting a 100% success rate in terms of sighting all the big 5 at one go.. remember this is Zoo.. no one can guarantee this in the wild.. go for the experience.. its absolutely worth it)"

"What a place. Dwyka Lodge is the bees knees. JB and staff are welcoming and Jannie the best ranger in the west made this the best holiday we have ever had. Thanks to you all. Excellent food and spotless accommodation. Friendly, classy and definitely 5 star."

"We stayed in a Dwyka Tented Lodge for 2 nights whilst on our honeymoon. This was our first experience of safari and it was just amazing from start to finish. The staff could not have been more accommodating and friendly. The lodge was stunning and the private jacuzzi was fab. We were in awe of how fantastic the whole place was. Our ranger Christopher was great. He was friendly and knowledgeable and pulled out all the stops to show us some amazing animals in their natural environment. Our only regret is that we didn't stay longer!"

"What a place! Staff are fantastic. Spent 3 days here and was amazing. Safari's are personal and small groups. Got to see wild animals up close. The guide's are very knowledgeable and friendly. Cannot rate this high enough! Was everything I expected and more! A definite must! Xx"

"We stayed in the Tented Lodge for 2 nights and it really didn't disappoint!! We loved the hot tub on the deck and even spotted shooting stars from it in the evening. Our ranger (Yani) was amazing and seemed to truly love his job as he was so passionate and knowledgeable - thank you Yani, you made our honeymoon extra special! We saw so many animals and experienced some great close up encounters!! The food is great and you get plenty of it! The staff are just wonderful and will do anything for you. It's only about 3.5 hrs from Cape Town so a very easy drive. I would highly recommend!!"

"A beautiful lodge in a magnificent environment at just 3 hours from cape town.We made several safaris in Africa and where not sure this would be a " real " safari but we where wrong . We saw elephants, giraffes, rhino's, white lions, cheetahs, zebras etc. Sanbona wildlife reserve takes extremely good care of its animals and the rangers of their visitors. Go there !"
