Wildlife

The diverse landscape of the reserve incorporates five pans on the Plains, which are excellent spots for birds and antelope, particularly in the evening and early morning. The Marico River that flows through the reserve is flanked by dense bush thickets and tall riverine vegetation including leadwood and marula.

The list of mammal species is almost endless, with lion, leopard, black and white rhino, elephant, buffalo, cheetah, and endangered wild dog being some of the most popular. Reviews

The time we spent at Tau flew by. The game drives were fantastic, and Mike could not do enough on the drives. Saw the big five and more, and every outing had something special on offer. Tumi, Godfrey and the rest of the staff could have not have been friendlier. Madikwe is a well managed reserve with an abundance of game.

Tau was everything we could have asked for and more for the three days my friends and I were there. The whole staff was always happy and welcoming. Food was great and different every meal. The lodge was awesome as you can watch animals at the waterhole all day. The rooms were also fantastic with a view of the bush. Above all, the game drives made the trip. Our ranger, Jesse, did everything he could to ensure we saw everything we came to Madikwe to see. We saw the big five (including lion cubs), wild dogs with pups, cheetahs, African wild cat, and all of the plains game. Jesse not only knew everything about the area/game and helped us get close to all the great animals, but he was also a great guy and a lot of fun. Tau was a 10/10 experience on all levels and recommend it for anyone.

There is not much else to say than that this lodge creates the perfect calming and friendly atmosphere in a picturesque surrounding. From arrival to departure Tumi (lodge manager) and his crew ensured that every moment of our stay was running smoothly and that we had an enjoyable, relaxing yet exciting stay. Our ranger, Renain, was a perfect guide to Madikwe and its beautiful wild animals. Skillful, confident and always making sure that we were at ease; fantastic! Our cabin was beautiful, overlooking the watering hole and always warm and clean which felt great. Staff kept us feeling at home! All our meals was simply beautiful and tasty, and returning from game drive to dine in the fired up Bumi was simply a stunning experience.Luxury throughout while feeling at home: My girlfriend and I can truly recommend Tau to everyone who wish to explore wildlife at the same time as relaxing!

We enjoyed our stay so much and found all of the staff like meeting up with long lost family members. The food was incredible thanks for the extra kilos John and Lorna, Ernie was our amazing knowledgeable ranger and he was attentive funny and became a friend. Godfrey and Tumi were helpful fun and also very attentive and our new SA friends, David and Rose looked after us like family we loved everything and everyone at Tau. We will definitely tell everyone we know about our amazing lifetime experience at Tau. I sat one day on our balcony and watched for two hours the elephants play and have mud baths and the babies be told off by their mums and aunt's - an experience like no other I have ever had. Thank you to everyone who made our stay so memorable - see you again one day.

Met at airport by car and on arrival welcomed with tea. Room very comfortable - even electric blanket if required. Food was very good & plenty of it. Drives out were excellent, our guide Kelly was so knowledgeable about animals, birds & plants we learnt a lot. Hope to go again soon. Other family members have also been to this reserve & really enjoyed the whole experience.

We have just returned from an incredible 3 night stay in tau game lodge. It was an incredible welcome to Africa!!The staff were fantastic, in particular Dylan our guide is highly recommended!! He went out of his way to ensure our visit was the best it could be, picking us early on days or dropping us off a little late if there was an exceptional sighting. We were extremely lucky in all our safaris, we saw the big 5 on our first one!!! I would recommend you stay enough time to get in 4 drives. We had 6 drives which was more than enough but then again we loved it.The spa was also value for funny and they were exceptional - Dina was friendly and gave me one of the best Swedish massages I have ever had - I am not exaggerating here! The food was good. Most importantly the staff seemed happy to work there which really made all the difference. The rooms are good too.I would recommend this holiday to any friends, families or couples. Really worth it - I for one am definitely going back to this magical place.Thank you Tau

I visited Tau Game Lodge for the day and really enjoyed my afternoon/evening there. I will try to stay for a couple evenings the next time I am in the area. Beautiful area with lots to see!Lunch was lovely with a great view overlooking a small lake (watering hole) and preparing for the wildlife we were about to see (we saw elephants, wildebeest, crocodiles, birds and a large antelope-type at this watering hole). There is also a gift shop in the lodge which had a great selection for souvenirs and gifts.Dylan was our guide and he was excellent. He really knew the details about what we were viewing and made an effort to track the animals. I could tell that he had studied this as he could explain things scientifically or in lay-people terms for us all to enjoy what we were viewing. He is knowledgeable and passionate about what he does and it shows.Of course nothing can be guaranteed in the wild, but we saw a pride of six lionesses which were entertaining to watch. We saw bull elephants, a bunch of zebra, and even a very rare small cat (I forgot its name). I got to see my first ever white rhinos and it made my week! The cat and the rhino sighting were at night as we drove back to the lodge and Dylan had a flashlight on - he never gave up and we were so lucky to catch those rare animals at night when I thought we had pretty much finished! Great effort and memorable adventure!

Loved this game lodge. From the moment the plane landed on the airstrip the staff were dedicated to our every need. They were kind and friendly and did absolutely everything to ensure that we had a good time. I am vegetarian and they went out of their way to accommodate me and provide me with the most excellent meals. All the chalets overlook the water hole and it was a wonderful experience to see the different animals coming for a drink. The rangers are exceptionally knowledgeable about the animals, birds, trees and landscape. Our ranger Dylan was fantastic. The rangers ensured that we got within feet of the Big Five during our game drives. It was truly a magnificent experience to see the wonderful animals in their natural environment, whilst being accommodated in five star luxury. We loved the outdoor shower and the heated electric blanket was a great surprise. Sumptuous and delicious breakfast and lunch was served on the patio overlooking the waterhole and dinner was served around the evening fire in the boma which added to the amazing African Experience.. My wife had two massages at the spa which were outstanding.

Tau Game Lodge is located in one of SA’s largest game reserves. It is four star safari hotel and it makes you wonder how they manage to keep up that standard in a remote part of the country, but they do. The staff are very professional and friendly, you always get a smile and a hello. The thatched chalets are spacious, scrupulously clean and have all amenities, except wi-fi, not unsurprisingly. Our chalet had a good size balcony (viewing platform?) facing a watering hole, that attracted a large variety of game. Fancy waking up to see elephants in the distance, well we did at Tau. We also had an en-suite bathroom and an open air shower that was really enjoyable, though we visited in winter. Meals were served buffet style with a reasonable variety of choices and of good quality. We also had a great evening at a BBQ buffet in the grounds lots of fun and laughter. Of course you visit game parks for the Safari experience and we weren’t let down in any way. Madikwe Game Reserve boasts large numbers and a wide variety of animals, we saw the big five the first day with our Ranger/Driver, Michael, organised by Tau, who was very knowledgeable, helpful and passionate about animals. It was our first experience in a game reserve, and Tau lived up to all the promises.
