"Fantastic place for truly live the Kruger experience! Rooms, staff (Norman, you're the guy) breakfast with zebras and lunch with elephants. The ranger (Texan) who drove us throughout the 4 game drives we had was simply the best. No words to describe what he made us feel during these two days together. Strongly recommended."

"We arrived at night and couldn't see much but the boardwalks. We did have a wonderful dinner and the food continued to be excellent. When we saw the camp, the next day, we realized that it was, indeed, a camp of 5 permanent tents isolated in the bush. We were able to see elephants grazing about half a kilometer away, some rhinos and a few monkeys. Clive, our safari driver, was remarkable. He was able to spot game long before we could see anything. Besides that, he was friendly and accommodating. We missed one morning game drive and when he came back after having seen a leopard, he made a special drive to take us back out to where he had seen it. Fortunately, it was still there. The woman who complained about seeing the leopard inside the gates didn't realize how lucky she was. When I asked him if he carried a rifle, he answered. "What for do I need a rifle?" This is from a guide who has worked for 15 years in the bush. Anyone who stays here should be prepared for the fact that, however comfortable, this is a bush camp. It does have electricity from a generator. We were provided with long, multi-bulbed lights to use in the dark. The first night, when we were very tired and feeling hesitant, George, the wonderful staff head, walked us to our room. I'm sure he would have done so every night had we desired. There is running water, but hot water was somewhat unpredictable. It didn't matter because the outdoor shower ran water in the ambient temperature and was very refreshing on a hot afternoon. The bed was fabulous--I've never had such comfortably overstuffed pillows. I can't say enough about the staff and how willing they were to do anything possible to make our stay more comfortable. George did, in fact, stay overnight and we were given a sound blaster to indicate any emergency, although we were told it had never been used. George also met us with hot towels (and lights at night) when we returned from game drives. For us, it was a near perfect first stay in the African bush."

"Camp Shonga is one of two camps of Shishangeni Lodge located in a 15,000 ha private concession within Kruger National Park (one of the largest if not the largest private concession I believe). That it is a private concession is a very important consideration. A very limited number of guests get to enjoy fantastic wildlife viewing all to themselves. This advantage of this cannot be overstated as a brief foray into the public area showed how chaotic this can be. For the three night stay we did 6 drives with the eagle-eyed, highly knowledgeable and very friendly ranger guide, Victor. The staff of the camp were friendly, nice and attentive. The meals were very good given the fact we are talking about a camp. Of course, camp is a loose term here as Camp Shonga has substantial pole house guest accommodation with thatch roofs above a raised platform. The "walls" are substantial tent fabric "windows" of bug proof netting. They huts are large and contain large comfortable furniture and comfortable beds. They are all connected to the main house by raised wooden walkways. They could do with a bit of maintenance here and there in terms of ensuring all zips close and the full functioning of the hot water system. That said, I went purely and simply for the wildlife viewing and in this I was not disappointed. It was a superb experience based on the wildlife itself, our ranger-guide and the staff. Highly recommended."

"We got engaged here in October 2010. What a 3 night stay it was. Every member of staff we loved. Every game drive was fantastic. Like viewing rhino grazing a few hundred meters away and readjusting the focus on the binoculars, oh hang on, a white tail flicking in the grass in front, a leopard! The night we got engaged was perfect. We came back from our afternoon drive and everything was so perfect. Champagne (which I "spontaneously" decided to order), a deck to ourselves with some snacks, the staff hiding in the kitchen, she said YES, and everyone was so happy. Thank you Camp Shonga. We will visit on an anniversary."

"My husband and I spent 3 days at Camp Shonga and loved it! We saw so many elephants we stopped counting. Also hyenas, leopard, hippos, rhinos, zebras, giraffes, and monkeys right outside our porch! The room was beautiful and we especially enjoyed the "treehouse" deck and outside shower. Late September had great weather- no rain, temperatures in the high 70's low 80's. It wasn't yet green, but saw lots of animals. There are only 5 rooms so it always felt private. Food was great at all meals- Henry and staff were welcoming and responsive."

"This lodge is spectacular for the simple reason that you are disconnected from the rest of society during your stay, and you feel truly at one with nature. The lodge boasts 5 tented rooms, each en suite. A guard must escort you from the main reception to your room as this lodge is completely unfenced from the Kruger. The lodge only has electricity part time in the day, hence you are as close with nature as a 5 star experience can get you. Your own driver takes you on a game viewing each morning and afternoon into the Kruger Park- home of all the Big 5."
