Bakubung, where the Big Five roam, a mere two-hour drive from the hustle and bustle of Johannesburg and ten minutes from Sun City, lies a place of breath-taking beauty and serenity
A place called Bakubung Bush Lodge. Concealed in the rich expanses of the malaria-free Pilanesberg National Park, Bakubung, or “People of the Hippo”, offers you everything you need to get in touch with the bush.
Our studio rooms either have two double beds or one king size bed, en suite bathroom, including a shower, air conditioner, direct dial telephone, tea/coffee machine, colour TV (with DStv bouquet), a hairdryer, plug for electric shaver and internet connectivity. All hotel rooms have doors leading onto either a balcony or a patio, and have panoramic views of the Park and the Hippo Pool.
Set in the crater of a long extinct volcano, the Pilanesberg National Park, which is home to Bakubung Lodge, ranks amongst the largest of the parks in South Africa and covers an area of some 55 000 hectares.
Apart from game drives, bush walks, birding and in-house entertainment, Bakubung has developed something even more engaging, the Junior Ranger’s Programme. This allows parents to enroll their young ones in a unique, educational and, most importantly, fun experience. Under the supervision of trained staff, parents can rest assured that their children will be well taken care of whilst participating in a host of activities, thus ensuring a great getaway for the whole family.
Facilities at the lodge includes a swimming pool, volleyball court, restaurant and bar, internet lounge, complimentary internet connectivity in rooms, a boma and 2 floodlit tennis courts.
Pilanesberg National Park offers guests sightings of a wide diversity of animal and plant life. This includes 360 species of birds, the Big Five and many other South African animals.

"Stayed in lodge 204 overlooking the water hole and looking down the valley into the Pilanesberg. 5 of us staying in the lodge, my adult daughter slept on the pull out bed and found it comfortable enough. Everything we needed was in the lodge and it was serviced every day. Dined at the restaurant one night and the food was very good. Great place for exploring the Pilanesberg."
"excellent family lodge, excellent value and great service. internet works really well. yes it's not a true bush experience but it's still a great experience. lots of lion sightings, a leopard and lots of rhinos. worth every penny."
"Wow loved the idea of staying so close to the animals the safari we went on we saw 1 of 2 leopards on the whole reserve don't leave your door open as monkeys will raid mini bar as upstairs found out morning safari is best early get up but worth it."
"While we were seconded to South Africa for a year we spent 3 long weekends in Bakabung bush lodge. We went alone and with two sets of visitors from the US. Pilsnesburg is about 2 hours from Johannesburg so is great if you are there on business and only have a couple of days to see some of the wildlife. The lodge is great and the food is good but make sure to sign up for all of the game drives you can. The Elephants and the birdlife were the main attraction for me but there is something for everyone here. The morning drives can be cool so wear layers that you can take off as the day warms up. A great place with lots for everyone."
"My husband and I have just come home on Sunday from this amazing lodge. The drive from jo-burg airport was approximately 2-3 hrs. On arrival the service was very warm and we were made at home. Our room on the ground floor was beautiful with a king bed lovely bathroom and the room was very clean. Dinner at night was very very good with a great choice and breakfast was just as good. Alcohol was also very cheap. Our room had a big sliding door so we could sit on our chairs on the grass and watch the animals come to the water hole drinking. (Amazing) Thank you very much to Jarrod who was our guide for two game drives. His knowledge was excellent. We had a small security problem and it was attended to immediately. Thank you. Over all this is an amazing lodge and we would stay again."
"We stayed in the time share chalets at Bakubung in July. We found them to be clean and well furnished, although the living area was a bit small. Bakubung is a beautiful lodge situated right at a waterhole. At night we sighted African Civet at the waterhole and a herd of elephants came to the lower waterhole one afternoon - due to the placement of the chalets in a "U" shape, we could walk along the boundary fence to about 20m away from the herd. Bakubung is well-placed in the Pilanesberg reserve with quick access either into the main park or to shops or Sun City nearby. The staff at Bakubung were very friendly and helpful and contributed to the positive experience. Our only complaint was the behaviour of rangers doing game drives from other camps or from outside the reserve - they disregarded bush etiquette at sightings and their passengers were extremely noisy at sightings, e.g. shouting to each other across the vehicles at a lion sighting. This is not the fault of Bakubang, however, but stricter management of people in the reserve is indicated. Overall, our stay at Bakubung was a wonderful experience and we would definitely make a plan to return."
"I stayed for 2 nights. Very easy to access from Johannesburg. Beautiful setting, with game wandering close to the Lodge. Excellent service from staff at check-in, dining and game drives. I stayed in the apartment-style accommodation which was pleasant, just found the air conditioning a bit too loud at night. The stand-alone houses look fantastic. There was ample choice of vegetarian food with generous buffets. I went out on morning and evening game drives - most of the drivers made an effort to track the big game through staying in contact with each other. A longer stay would have been relaxing. A lovely experience."
"Enjoyed a visit to Bakubung. Room was good and overlooked the waterhole. Staff very helpful and friendly. Restaurant had wide variety of food. Had evening and morning game drives and spotted lion and cheetah, unfortunately no Elephant. Evening drive with meal at the Boma was good."
"Awesome accommodation (in the hotel) amazing food and a majestic setting. From the terrace outside the dining/bar area, a large view of the park opens up. A water hole is conveniently located close to the fence, providing wonderful game viewing. Nothing bad to be said at all."
"BakuBung Bush Lodge is right at the pilanesberg national park. It is very close to sun city. The lodge itself has a huge property and one can walk around it or laze in swimming pool if you are not going for jungle ride. There was morning and an evening safari. we did both and were glad as we saw different animals each time. It was great to see Lioness waling with 3 of her cubs right in the middle of the road. we also saw two elephants fighting very close to our van. Also sighted Giraffes, Rhinos, Hippo, Springboks. Even though it was freezing cold in the morning the vist was worth it. Stayed May 2014, travelled with fam"
